What’s the problem
Our Inner Cities are Broken.
Inner cities are blighted by unemployment, crime and poverty. We need to fix this, as by 2030 more than 92% of the entire UK population will live in these areas. In Wythenshawe 35.9% of children live under the poverty line and of this 60% come from working families (Manchester Family Poverty Strategy)
We are based in Wythenshawe (one of the largest and most deprived council housing estates in Europe) but our problem affects every city in the country, and most cities in the world.
What they say.
“In Benchill its easier to buy Crack Cocaine than it is to buy Calpol for my Kids.” — Wythenshawe Resident.
“If you are born into a deprived, tough inner city area it is ‘inner city’ that becomes your ‘culture’ regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexuality or ability. Name a culture of people and I will find you a cultural centre that supports their shared needs, norms and values, has like minded-people, education, training and enterprise etc; everyone gets a cultural centre, but not inner city – we have gangs.” — Greg Davis, Founder – United Estates of Wythenshawe.
“This country does not help people to help themselves. I love Manchester, but we live in hell. The only resources we get our helicopters, police, cameras and prisons, these are hell keepers. We have no resources to find the peace keepers” Street Peace Conference contributor.
