UEW’s response to Covid-19

3 weeks ago UEW was forced to close due to a deadly outbreak of coronavirus. A pandemic that has seen people, nationally and globally, locked down at home to prevent the spread of the virus.
The kind and dedicated staff at UEW, who are furloughed, and volunteers are giving their time freely to run a project supporting those most vulnerable in Wythenshawe at this time.
We are picking up and dropping off on a daily basis, 7 days a week from Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, BP garages, M&S, Holts plus local shops, bakers etc. We are dropping a wide variety of nutritious food such as fruit and vegetables, bread, ready meals etc to individuals and families who are self-isolating. Numerous individual food parcels are made up and dropped off daily to the most needy and vulnerable in our community. The donated items are usually perishables, so we are adding to the food parcels by purchasing extra items such as tea, coffee, milk, sugar, cheese, sanitary products, tins, cleaning items and nice treats plus gluten free items where needed. This is to ensure that the vulnerable remain in isolation, preventing that trip to the supermarket which will put themselves and others in danger from coronavirus. If you know anyone who would benefit from our support please feel free to email [email protected]
5 full trays of perishable items such as bread, fresh fruit and vegetables are taken to our charity and left on site in our portacabin shop. Local people can come and take what they need. We have a strict one in one out policy and everyone is social distancing 2 metres apart. Our volunteer remains on site until the last item is taken. Usually we have an overwhelming response and food is depleted within the hour.
Any food that is unusable is taken to the community farm for the animals. Nothing is wasted.
What would help is access to commercial fridge freezers. If you can help or would like to donate please call Samantha on 07751861938
