Mums Mart
After a flash point situation in the playground of a local school in Wythenshawe on a cold February morning, a meeting was arranged, calling on mums and (dads) to come and discuss their concerns and issues. The venue was Brownley Green Methodist Church (BGMC). We expected 5/6 people, incredibly 30 people turned up. Discussion over the course of the evening boiled down to 4 main concerns……..
- Toxic debt
- Mental health issues
- Crime and the fear of crime
- Lonliness and isolation
Being a Christian based, solution led group the discussion was lively. Life skills in the room extended to cake making, knitting, candles, wax melts, soaps and smellies and an endless array of street level entrepreneurialism. Family days out was a must and there was a strong feeling of “together we can do”.
Mums Mart has now evolved into a cohesive, structured group of local Mums (and Dads) with fact finding trips to South Africa and Kenya and lead participants in an international conference. They provide free food to local families sourced from local supermarkets, Aldi, Lidl and Marks and Spencers. There is a saving scheme and family holidays away.
On Saturday expect low cost food stalls, hot food, tea and coffee, plus craft stalls, unique gifts, sweets, jewellery and much much more. 100% of the profits go towards taking families away. The next booked trip is taking 5 families to Pontins, Prestatyn for a weekend away. Without this support these families would not be able to afford a well needed break.
